Description
the serpentine toprails above cross-hatched recessed carving, the pierced gothic trellis splats above drop-in seats, on chamfered square legs joined by H-shaped stretchers, six standard chairs bearing the embossed brass trade-labels `Established 1824/ R. GARNETT & SONS/ CABINET MAKERS/ WARRINGTON'
Condition
THE GEORGE III CHAIRS:
Chair (un-numbered) - Four later strengthening corner brackets to seat rail. Joints loose. Back right hand leg slightly chipped at the tip. Top of the front left hand leg is badly cracked and repaired.
Chair I - Later corner strengthening brackets to seat rail. Both back legs chipped. Both front legs repaired adjacent to the seat rail.
Chair II - Good overall condition. Two later corner strengthening brackets to the seat rail.
Another Chair II - Later corner strengthening brackets to seat rail. Joints slightly loose. Top right hand leg cracked.
Chair III - Rear right hand leg chipped. Later strengthening corner brackets to the seat rails and also later iron brackets to all legs beneath seat rail. Front left hand leg cracked. The top left hand stretcher cracked and repaired.
Chair IIII - Two later strengthening corner brackets to seat rail. Top of left hand leg cracked.
Chair V - Rear back left leg chipped at the tip. Joints loose. Four later brackets. Top at the front right hand leg cracked and repaired. The top rail cracked and repaired.
Chair VI - Later strengthening corner brackets to the seat rail. Both back legs chipped. The top of the right hand front leg cracked.
Chair VII - loose joints. Later strenghening corner brackets to the seat rail. Back left leg tipped. Back right-hand leg chipped at the tip. Both front legs cracked adjacent to the join with the front and side rails.
Chair VIII - Tip of the back left hand leg chipped. Two later front strenthening corner brackets to seat rail and four later iron reinforcing brackets to the legs. Cross stretcher cracked. Left hand rear leg cracked adjacent to join with side stretcher. Top rail cracked and repaired.
Armchair - Two front strengthening corner brackets to seat rail later. Tops of both front legs cracked. Minor age cracks to the splat.
19th CENTURY CHAIRS
One of the seat rails has a depository label for `Stott's' with serial number Q2050 and manuscript name `Fox'
Armchair - Two later strengthening corner brackets to the seat rail. Slightly faded colour.
All six of the standar chairs are in good overall condition with minor old marks and scratches.
The entire matched set has a good general colour and patina. The 19th century chairs are a very close match in quality and timber. General old marks and scratches consistent with age. Leather seats a lovely worn and mellow colour but with inevitable scuffing and wear.
