Catalogue Note

The present pedestals are of a near identical design to a pair of pedestals in the collection of the Earl of Harewood at Harewood House, Yorkshire (see illustration). A similar pair of mahogany pedestals was formerly in the Entrance Hall at Home House, No. 20 Portman Square, London, illustrated in Dr Margaret Whinney, Home House, No. 20 Portman Square, 1969, p.85 (information kindly supplied by Eileen Harris), a further pair are recorded in the collection of the Earls of Derby in the early-20th century, illustrated in Francis Lenygon, Furniture in England from 1660 to 1760, 1914, p.188, fig. 283.

The candelabrum are, without their finials, identical to those made for Langley Park, Norfolk, illustrated Jonathan Bourne and Vanessa Brett Lighting in the Domestic Interior, 1991, p.101, fig.320, and sold Phillips, London, 19 February 1991, Lot 30 for £45,540.
