A Chinese export gilt and black lacquer cabinet on stand mid-18th century

Description

  • 190cm. high, 81cm. wide, 42cm. deep; 6ft. 2¾ in., 2ft. 8in., 1ft. 4½ in.
the architectural pediment flanked by foliated scrolls above a pair of arched panel doors enclosing a fitted interior incorporating sliding pierced trellis panel doors surrounded by an arrangement of twenty drawers, the stand with a pierced key pattern apron, the shaped legs with c-scrolls to the knees, on claw and ball feet , decorated throughout with pagodas and temples in an exotic landscape, decoration refreshed

Condition

Decoration refreshed throughout but nevertheless shows signs of wear with losses to the lacquer on both sides of the scrolled decoration to the pediment. The lacquer on the right hand side is cracked and lifting in places with some losses. The left hand side also with some losses and with some significant crude re-decoration. The doors with some re-painted areas and with some cracking and losses to the lacquer. The interior largely in good condition but with some re-painted areas. The lacquer to the inside of both doors is worn and there are losses and flaking along the bottom edge of both doors. The stand with some cracks and minor losses to lacquer. Catalogue Note

A Chinese Export black lacquered bureau cabinet with a cresting of similar form to the offered lot is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and is illustrated in Margaret Jourdain, Chinese Export Art, 1950, pl.24, p.85. 

A further bureau cabinet with an identical upper section to the current cabinet was sold Le Gout Steinitz, I, Christie's New York, 19 October 2007, lot 30.
