Description

  • Approximately: 220cm. high, 212cm. wide; 7ft. 3in., 6ft. 11in.
From the Story of Diana, depicting the death of  Niobe's children (Met.6:204-312), a subject representative of pride humbled, woven with the youths in a landscape setting, trying to avoid the arrows that are being sent down upon them from the heavens, and Niobe approaches the collapsing figures with her arm outstretched, without a border

Literature

See Catàlogo de Tapices del Patrimonio Nacional, Madrid, 1986, Vol. II, Series 43, pg. 13, The Story of Diana, for a weaving of the same subject, from a Paris workshop, circa 1618, from which the composition of the present tapestry, although simplified, is likely to have been inspired.
