An unusual Italian faux tortoiseshell and parcel-gilt mirror, Florentine second half 18th century

  • 156cm. high, 112cm. wide; 4ft.9in., 3ft.8in.
with a rectangular divided plate applied with four gilt-bronze paterae within a beaded border, the raking frame painted to simulate tortoiseshell, now covered with glass, interposed with glass diaper motifs, within a beaded border

Condition

Colour of faux tortoiseshell slightly lighter and gilding less green and more golden and attractive than in the catalogue photograph. Chip in the middle of top right side in the glass border. Degradation to mercury of the mirror plate as visible from photograph. Some very minor chips and losses generally and hairline construction cracks at joints and generally commensurate with age, as visible from the catalogue photograph. Unusual lot in overall good condition.
