Description

  • crossed swords mark in blue, one incised B148
  • 58.5cm., 23in. length
after original models by Kirchner, each modelled recumbent facing left and right, their lioness's bodies covered in a tasseled saddle cloth, wearing a mantle surmounted by a tiara moulded with a gilt flowerhead (minor restoration)

Condition

restoration to claws on front right paw and tips of front claws to left paw, the other with restoration to both front little claws, one sphinx with a very slight restored chip to the rear

The Dresden Porcelain collection possesses one large sphinx and a number of small ones. The larger version is illustrated by C.Albiker, Die Meissener Porzellantiere im 18.Jahrhundert, 1959, fig.11 (see illustration opposite page). Modelled by Kirchner in 1732, his Taxa records, 10.1732 XVII BI.322: Zwey Sphinxe verändert-gross.
