  • 46cm. 18¼in. high
7-inch dial with rococo spandrels, matted centre with calendar and mock pendulum apertures, the arch with a strike/silent dial and applied with a silvered arc signed William Scafe, London, similarly signed two train fusee movement with six knopped pillars, re-instated verge escapement, pull repeating the quarters on six bells and with a further bell for the hour, the backplate engraved with leaf scrolls around a basket of flowers, inverted bell top case with brass carrying handle and foliate front door frets

Condition

Dial in good condition. Movement reasonably clean and appears to run, verge escapement re-instated with later apron to the back cock, one quarter repeating bell cracked. The case re-polished, part of one foot detached, some damage to dial mask and other minor scuffs and veneer cracks throughout. With a case key but no winder.

Catalogue Note

William Scafe was born in Yorkshire and was apprenticed to his father as a blacksmith.  At some stage he moved to London and in 1721 he gained his Freedom of the Clockmakers' Company, serving as an Assistant in 1743 and becoming Master in 1749. He had premises at the sign of the Clock in King Street near the Guildhall.
