the cresting with an alternating band of anthemions and foliage flanked by a bacchic mask above a rectangular mirror plate within a frame carved with medallions and neo-clasical motifs in the manner of Piranesi, the console table with a rectangular veneered sienna marble top, above a scrolling foliate frieze applied with medallions on two hippocamp supports with a mirrored backboard on a concave-fronted platform base

Condition

Colours overall less greenish and gilding more golden and attractive than in catalogue photograph. Mirror: Some very minor chips to the gilding and carving, but these are not too noticeable. The detail of the carving on the borders is very good quality. There has been some touching up of the gilding in places e.g. to the winged mask on the top of the right border which has been well executed. The gilding overall is slightly dirty and would benefit from a light clean according to taste. The ivory paint shows craquelure and also some hairline cracks together with some construction cracks at the angles flanking the plate, commensurate with age as visible from the catalogue photograph. Table: There are some minor chips to veneered marble top and also there appears to be two triangular shaped repairs at front corners. There are some hair-line construction cracks on the base, and the ivory paint on the platform base appears to be quite refreshed. This piece is much more impressive in reality and is in overall good, conserved condition and can be placed immediately.
