This pair of English wall lights stamped by Osler, is loosely based upon an 18th century French model by Pierre-François Feuchère, ordered in 1788 for the cabinet de toilette of Marie-Antoinette at Saint-Cloud and which are now in the Louvre and illustrated by Alcouffe, op. cit., p.166.
The firm of F & C Osler Ltd was established in Broad Street Birmingham in 1807, by Thomas Osler and the business specialised in selling drops but in time their reputation was such that their London showroom attracted such illustrious visitors as the Duke of Wellington, Sir Robert Peel and Prince Albert. They were known for their magnificent glass chandeliers and exhibited a twenty foot high crystal fountain at the 1851 Great Exhibition, in London. They sometimes stamped their gilt-bronzes `F & C Osler'.
