Catalogue Note

The magnificent structure of Herstmonceux Castle was built by Sir Roger Fiennes, treasurer to Henry VI, in 1441. Until 1700 it had served as the seat of the Earls of Sussex. During the 18th century the castle was largely unoccupied and by Callow's time it had deteriorated into a ruin. The building was restored in the early 20th century and is now home to the Queen's University of Canada.
