Catalogue Note
This miniature appears to be derived from two portraits of the Prince: the head is based upon a painting by Domenico Dupra, painted in 1742, while the costume may be linked to a composition by Anton Raphael Mengs, circa 1748. An almost identical version of this miniature was sold at Bonhams, London, 5 November 2002, lot 30. The authorship of these miniatures has been the subject of a considerable amount of speculation and conjecture: the names of Veronica Telli, Sir Robert Strange, Nicholas Dixon and Pompeo Batoni have all been put forward, but none of these attributions may be argued unequivocally.
