Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in very good condition. ULTRAVIOLET Examination under ultraviolet light reveals minor strengthening in the background and an uneven layer of old discoloured varnish. There is some very minimal dirt flecking to the surface. FRAME Held in a Regency frame with stylized scallop motifs in the corners.

Catalogue Note

William Johnston's younger child, George, shown here dressed in blue, married Jean Douglas. On his death in 1900 the Johnston property was inherited by Henry Maitland who was the son of George's sister Mary and her husband Colonel Charles Maitland of Rankeillor. The Lathrick estate in Fife passed to Charles Maitland Magill of Crichton.
