Condition

STRUCTURE The canvas has been lined. PAINT SURFACE The painting appears to be in reasonable condition. The cracquelure is even and some scattered infilling is visible to the sitter's cloak. There has been a horizontal repair made to the upper left of the canvas of about three inches in length, with a small area of re-touching just above. There is also a vertical line of repair work of about six inches in length to the lower left of the canvas. ULTRAVIOLET Ultraviolet light reveals a repaired tear to the canvas above the sitter's right hand and another smaller repair to the lower left. There are also scattered areas of re-touching. FRAME Held in a gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

The sitter was the son of William Greville, 7th Baron Brooke of Beauchamps Court and his wife Mary, daughter of the Hon. Henry Thyme. On 5th May 1742 he married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Lord Archibald Hamilton. He died at his family seat, Warwick Castle.
