Catalogue Note

One of Australia's most inventive and expressive non-objective painters, Dick Watkins was born in Sydney in 1937. Largely self-taught, he did occasionally attend the Julian Ashton Art School and the East Sydney Technical College between 1955 and 1958. A regular exhibitor from the early 1960s, Watkins first came to prominence through his association with Sydney's Central Street Gallery, and his inclusion in the landmark exhibition of high modern abstraction, The Field (National Gallery of Victoria, 1968). He represented Australia at the XVIII Biennial de Sao Paulo in Brazil (1985).

His lifetime achievement has been recognised in two major monographic museum retrospectives, at Wagga Wagga Regional Art Gallery in 1989 and at the National Gallery of Australia (Dick Watkins in context, 1993). His work can be seen in the National Gallery of Australia and all state galleries, as well as in numerous corporate and private collections.
