Catalogue Note

While this high chest's overall proportions and skirt profile relates closely to high chests made in Salem, Massachusetts, differences in construction and ornament suggest that it was constructed in New Hampshire or in an Northeastern Massachusetts town outside of Salem proper.

As explained by Kembel Widmer, exposed drawer blade dovetails on the side of the case are rarely seen in Salem yet are common on New Hampshire pieces.  Furthermore, the dovetails and dressing of inside surfaces are not as refined as those of Salem-made objects.  Lastly, the swirl rosettes are not found on Salem high chests.
