Description

  • approximately 77 by 88 in. (195.6 by 223.52 cm)
composed of red, white and blue solid cotton patches with the legend 1876 interspersed with blue stars; all framed with red and white borders; the corners pieced legend CENTENNIAL, with trapunto red dots, the white cotton field with finely stitched diagonal and channel quilting; some minor stain.

Condition

some minor stain (small) and minor "beiging" of white cotton; no rips, tears, replacements apparent

Catalogue Note

This quilt originated in Teutopolis, Illinois, a German farming community.  The red used is "Turkey red" a color fast red pigment used in the 1880's.  The quilting patterns reinforces--visually and actually--the design of this patriotic quilt.
