Description

  • height 6 in.; width 3 in. (15.2 cm; 7.6 cm)
the handsome, large and dense tooth engraved on the front with a full-length figure of Jack Tar, holding his hat aloft, his black tie and hair blowing in the wind, on his shoulder, an American eagle grasping a banner inscribed Free Trade and Sailors Rights, the figure standing on a rockwork, leaning on an anchor, a red, white and black United States shield by his left foot; the figure enclosed within a lattice work reserve and arch enclosing a depiction of a whaling ship flying the American flag, the 'proscenium' arch enclosing the inscription, W A GILPIN, the reverse engraved with a depiction of a fully rigged whaleship.

Condition

condition appears to be excellent – no cracks, chips or checks are apparent; engraving and color are strong; overall patina is a warm ivory tone – slightly duller finish to the ivory in the pictorial areas than on the tip on both sides.
