Catalogue Note

The stepped maple cleat relates directly to the stepped cleats on other Rhode Island tilt-top tea table (see lot 210).  The cylindrical shape of the standard is related to those found on earlier Rhode Island candlestands (see Erik Gronning and Dennis Carr, "Early Rhode Island Turning" ed. Luke Beckerdite, American Furniture,  (Lebanon, NH: University Press of New England, 2005), pp. 16-7, fig 37, note 17 and Sotheby's New York, Important Americana, October 7, 2006, sale no. 8209, lot 298).
