Catalogue Note
A desk-and-bookcase from the same shop is in the collection of Dartmouth College Museum and Galleries, Hanover, New Hampshire (see Margaret J. Moody, American Decorative Arts at Dartmouth, (Hanover, NH: Dartmouth College Museum, 1981), no. 14, p. 14) That desk-and-bookcase, according to family tradition belonged to Peter Hayes, who was born in Dover, NH, in 1688 and died in 1757. It descended in the family to Chester Hayes of North Berwick, Maine, and then to Hammond Vinton Hayes, grandson of Judge William Allen Hayes, who married Dartmouth President Nathan Lord's (1792-1870) sister. Another related desk and bookcase is in the Watson Collection (see Philip D. Zimmerman, American Federal Furniture and Decorative Arts from the Watson Collection, (Columbus, GA: The Columbus Museum, 2004), no. 37, pp. 86-7). Another example is in a private collection.
