Catalogue Note

Sarah Mingin worked one of the earliest-known samplers to name the Easton School which was formerly believed to have been in Easton, Pennsylvania (Bolton and Coe, p.386).  It was a Friends' school near Lumberton in Evesham Township, Burlington County, New Jersey, and existed from 1803 until 1870.  Sarah included initials, probably for her parents, and also EC for her schoolmistress Elizabeth Conrow.  Her initials also appear on the similar sampler of Sarah's classmate Eliza Moore, who included a modest rendition of the Westtown School.  Elizabeth Conrow, of Moorestown, New Jersey, attended the Friends' Westtown School, in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1807 and taught at the Easton School in 1812 and 1813.  (See Ring, Girlhood Embroidery, Vol. II, figs. 538,539).
