Catalogue Note

Rachel Evans and her sister Syllania both worked samplers at the Pine Grove School which was east of present-day Medford in Evesham Township, Burlington County, New Jersey.  They were daughters of Jacob Evans (b.1755) and his second wife, Rachel Borton (1774-1844).  Their father was a trustee of the Pine Grove School, which was formerly assigned to Charles City County, Virginia (Bolton and Coe, p.387)
