Description

  • John James Audubon (after)
  • Great White Heron (Plate CCLXXXI)
  • sheet 637 by 950 mm 25 1/16 by 37 3/8 in
Hand-colored engraving with etching and aquatint, by R. Havell, 1835, on wove paper with the J. Whatman 1836 watermark, with margins, in good condition apart from a few pale specks of foxing, a diagonal crease at lower right with an associated repair, the margins with slight discoloration, stitch holes at the disbound edge, framed

Condition

In good condition as catalogued, the colors are fresh and bright. The specks of foxing are visible in the body of the bird, and the upper sky, although they are generally pale and unobtrusive. The crease at lower right is sharp and measures 5 1/2 inches; there is an associated short repaired tear at the lower sheet edge. There are two soft creases in the lower image to the right of center measruing 5 and 4 inches. The discoloration in the margins is pale but mottled (suggesting possible cleaning), consisting of mat stain, surface soiling, time stain at the sheet edges. The verso is further discolored, suggesting the print was previously laid down.
