Description
- John James Audubon (after)
- Snowy Owl (Plate CXXI)
- sheet 975 by 642 mm 38 3/8 by 25 1/4 in
Hand-colored engraving with etching and aquatint, by R. Havell, c.1832, on wove paper with the J. Whatman 1831 watermark, with full margins, in good condition except the colors slightly attenuated, an area of damp stain in the upper left sheet corner, the sheet edges with discoloration and a few shallow nicks, framed
Condition
The print is in good condition as catalogued and this is nearly a full sheet. The colors - the yellow of the eyes and the blue in the background - are very slightly attenuated. The area of damp stain at upper left measures c. 4 1/2 by 4 1/2 and is generaly inconspicuous in the image, but has discolored the margins and verso. The sheet edges are discolored with pale green discoloration in the lower margin particularly to the left of the title (possible damp stain but no buckling of the paper). A few very shallow nicks/losses are visible at the sheet edges at upper left and the upper right sheet corner.
