Hand-colored aquatint, the vessels colored by J. Pringle, 1844, printed by W. Neale, on wove paper, with wide margins, generally in good condition apart from pale mottled discoloration (mainly in the sky at right), the margins with extensive adhesive remains and associated skinning, a small circular loss at the upper right sheet edge, the veros with mottled mat stain and tape remains

Condition

The print is generally in good condition and the colors are fresh. Mottled pale foxing is visible in the image in the sky mainly at upper right and also in the margins. The print was previously adhered to a front mat and has since been removed, resulting in extensive adhesive remains and skinned spots throughout the margins and sheet edges. There is a 1/4 inch in diameter circular loss at the upper sheet edge at right and a few short tears at the left sheet edge. Discoloration continues on the verso, along with three tape remains (non-archival) along the upper sheet edge.

Catalogue Note

Robert Havell issued this print in 1844 as a companion print to the PANORAMIC VIEW OF NEW YORK (TAKEN FROM THE NORTH RIVER) (Dèak 498) which he had executed in 1839 and publiished in 1840.   This earlier print was also hand-colored by J. Pringle and printed by W. Neale.
