waraba ou jara, représentant une tête de lion. L'ample front bombé se prolonge dans le volume du nez droit, encadré par les yeux rapprochés, percés, la mâchoire largement ouverte sur une rangée de dents signifiées par des tiges de bambou. La puissance des traits est accentuée par la riche polychromie brune, rehaussée de bandes rouges s'entrecroisant, et mouchetée de blanc. Il a conservé, au sommet de la tête, son fer rituel. Profonde patine d'usage.
Condition
Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. The bamboo not as old as the mask, replaced within the culture.

Catalogue Note
Le masque lion, waraba ou jara, constitue la forme la plus rare des masques du korè, société initiatique Bamana "destinée à construire l'identité masculine [...] tous les sept ans, une classe d'âge est 'tuée au korè' [...] A la fin de la retraite en brousse, quand les initiés rentrent au village, certains portent les masques correspondant aux animaux qu'ils incarnent" (Colleyn, 2002 : 98). Parmi ces animaux figurent le plus couramment les hyènes et les singes, et plus rarement, comme ici, les lions.
La profonde patine d'usage atteste son ancienneté. cf. Colleyn (idem : 115, cat. 97) pour un masque comparable, provenant de la région de Ségou.
