- haut. 52 cm
- 20 1/2 in
kipong, dont la riche polychromie - rouge, blanche et noire - accentue la très belle densité de la composition. Le visage est marqué par les traits puissants : pommettes saillantes, nez busqué aux ailes dilatées, yeux ajourés aux pupilles signifiées par des opercules de coquillage turbo, bouche ouverte sur des dents peintes en noir, barbe en résine de parinarium partiellement rehaussée de chaux et sertie de graines. La coiffe en bandeau est surmontée de la représentation de deux hautes plumes verticales au décor de kapkap ajouré.

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture.
Some losses to the beard. Right ear broken at the base, repaired (adhesive). Some seeds are missing.
Back: one crack (with loss) on the back of the head.

Les masques malangan comptaient près de trente types, certains servant à lever des tabous, d'autres à collecter des fonds ou à annoncer la tenue d'une prochaine cérémonie.
Celui-ci s'apparente, à la fois par son iconographie et par son style, au masque kipong de la collection André Breton (Calmels-Cohen, André Breton, 17 avril 2003, n° 6127).
