Les "boucliers-brassards" ndome, utilisés par les jeunes guerriers Kikuyu lors des cérémonies d'initiation, se transmettaient précieusement de père en fils. Les motifs en chevron qui les caractérisent étaient répétés dans les peintures corporelles de l'initié. Selon Dewey (in Bassani, 2002 : 252), les aînés d'une famille pouvaient également donner "leur bouclier à leurs jeunes frères, mais chaque nouvelle génération d'initiés grattait les vieilles ornementations pour redécorer le bouclier". L'utilisation ancienne et répétée du bouclier présenté ici est attestée par la profonde patine d'usage et plusieurs réparations indigènes.
