mbulu ngulu, d'une grande élégance, à l'ample front bombé formant une visière en surplomb de la face concave. Le bas du visage est décoré de lamelles de laiton disposées horizontalement de part et d'autre du motif central cruciforme plaqué, le nez en trièdre à l'arête aigüe flanqué d'yeux en cabochon, les pupilles signifiées. Les coiffes latérales sont tronquées, à pendeloques verticales, le croissant transverse orné d'une arête médiane repoussée. Belle patine profonde du bois, sur le haut piétement en losange et au dos.

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. To the back, the left part of the top pattern has been broken and repaired with nails.

Catalogue Note
Selon la classification établie par Chaffin (1979 : 214 ; groupe 17) d'une part, et Perrois (1985 : 46 et 48 ; catégorie IV, variante 3) d'autre part, cette figure de reliquaire au visage concave-convexe constituerait une variante du groupe dit « classique », que ces chercheurs attribuent aux groupes Obamba et Mindoumou, situés dans la région de Franceville. Germain (2001 : 18-19), s'appuyant sur une forte ressemblance avec des exemplaires observés par la mission Savorgan de Brazza dans un village ndoumou en 1885, penche en faveur d'une attribution Mindoumou.
