de conception surréaliste – le corps résumé à deux pans rectangulaires légèrement bombés séparés par un jour étroit, le cou surdimensionné surmonté d'une tête coiffée d'une haute crête sagittale, le visage projeté vers l'avant, les traits - disparaissant sous l'épaisse patine - résumés à la bouche ouverte, rehaussée de pigments rouges. Patine noire, lisse et brillante sur le cou, épaisse et croûteuse sur le buste et la tête. Le cou porte, inscrit à l'encre blanche, le numéro d'inventaire : 47.

Condition
Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Thin crack along the right side of the neck, partially filled. Few chips in the thick encrusted patina.

Catalogue Note
La conception de cette sculpture évoque celle des masques d'épaule créés par les Mumuyé et les Waja (Région de la Haute Benue, Est du Nigeria) et apparaissant dans le cadre des cycles agraires, liés à la fécondité. Sa dimension et l'étroitesse de la fente indiquent qu'elle était portée, non pas sur les épaules, mais probablement au-dessus de la tête, en cimier.
cf. Bassani (2004 : 219, n° 3-51) pour un masque d'épaule de forme comparable, Mumuyé ou Waja.
L'archaïsme de la sculpture, dont la puissance est accentuée par l'épaisse patine croûteuse surmodelant la tête et le buste, permettent d'attribuer - selon toute vraisemblance - cette œuvre d'allure surréaliste à un sculpteur Waja. La profonde patine d'usage atteste son ancienneté.
