Catalogue Note

The marks to the lid could possibly relate to a maker, called B... S.... recorded by Howard Cotterell, Old Pewter, Its Makers and Marks, London, 1969, p. 351. mark no. 5462.

This type is often referred to as a Beefeater flagon as the lid was said to resemble the hats worn by Beefeaters at the Tower of London.

For a very similar example, dated circa 1650 and again with twin cusp thumbpiece, see Cotterell (op. cit. plate XXXVII, a).
