Condition

Good colour and patina and of intensely used appearance with residual old losses through out and traces of old worm. Cover includes a partial split and incomplete circular escutcheon and another lacking. One end cleat on the sided of the top with large loss and opposing cleat lacking. The front moulded cleat with loss at left end and old repair at right end. The front includes moulding losses below the arches and horizontal split to the front board showing within the arches. The sides with timber and moulding losses. Indications of a former plinth or base moulding that is now lacking. Reverse of cover with applied old metal patching to secure partial split and the ornate metalwork is partially crudely inset with old fragmented timber. The rear with separation and the reverse of the front with lock now lacking with old fragmented timber and replaced timber to block the key apertures of the front. The rear of the interior with typical separation and the outer side of the rear shows an old iron staple to secure this and a lot of old fragmenting at the base and some fresh fragmenting in one lower corner on the rear. The sheer tiredness of this elegant old chest is part of its attraction together with the good colour and patina that combine to portray a long history of use.
