Catalogue Note

The author visited Greece in 1832, the year of King Otho's accession. His Sketches provide an account of the Greek War of Independence, Ali Pasha, Alexander Mavrogordato, and other important figures of the time. Two chapters are devoted to 'the character of modern Greeks' and 'the present condition and future prospects of the Turkish Empire'. There are also descriptions of Scutari, Constantinople, Corinth and Attica.
