Catalogue Note

These pamphlets relate to the controversy which took place between the Greek Deputies and the firms of Bayard and Howland over the building of two frigates (the Hope and the Liberator). The costs turned out to be at least twice the original estimates and only one of the ships ever reached the Greeks as one had to be sold immediately to pay for the other, arousing much popular indignation against the builders. Orlandos and Luriottis were accused at the least of extreme naivety and a rash of pamphlets ensued.
