Catalogue Note

an important work on the history of the greek war of independence. Gordon, a fervent philhellene, first travelled in Greece during 1810-1812 and spent many years in the Levant. He joined the London Greek Committee and returned to Greece in 1826, becoming a major-general in the Greek army. In 1828 he settled in Argos and began work on his history.

The bibliophile Christides who owned this copy was a member of a well-known family of printers established in Istanbul. In this copy a pocket has been made for the map at the end of volume 1; it usually faces the title.
