first edition, folio (424 x 267mm.), title with hand-coloured engraved vignette, dedication leaf, 28 hand-coloured plates and 2 maps, some folding, 13 engravings in the text, all but 2 coloured (the whole sequence numbered 1–45), two extra plain plates bound in, contemporary half morocco, title and dedication browned at foot, plate 36 with short tear at fold, binding repaired and recornered

Catalogue Note

Based on Gell's visit the Troad in 1801 with Edward Dodwell. Byron alluded to Gell's work in English Bards (1809): "Of Dardan tours let dilettanti tell, / I leave topography to classic Gell".
