Catalogue Note

During his third year at the French Academy in Rome (1852-53) Garnier was sent to the recently established French School of Archaeology at Athens. It was at this time that these drawings were made, though they were not published until much later. He became one of the foremost French architects of the nineteenth century and designed the Paris Opera.
