Catalogue Note

"The object with which the author was most studiously occupied during his various excursions in Greece, was an accurate exhibition of this interesting country, both with respect to its ancient remains and its present circumstances" (preface p.viii). Dodwell undertook two Grecian tours: the first with Sir William Gell in 1801 to the Ionian Islands and the Troad, the second whilst a prisoner of war allowed by his French captors to explore mainland Greece and to revisit the Ionian Islands.

The advertisements at the end of volume 1 were not present in the Blackmer or Atabey copies. On page 1 they record the publication of the first two parts (of 12) of Dodwell's Views in Greece (see lot 55), "Greece. This day is published, in imperial folio, part I. Price 2l. 12s. 6d. Views in Greece from the original drawings by Edward Dodwell..."
