Catalogue Note

Brunet notes that only two hundred copies were printed. It was intended that forty livraisons were to be issued, each containing four plates to total 160 plates. However, only half the intended number actually appeared. The work describes the voyage made by Chenavard, Etienne Rey and others during 1843 to 1844 and includes many fine views of Athens (almost one third of the total), Delphi and Ithaca, as well as a number of views in Turkey and Egypt. Etienne Rey published his own very similiar account in 1867 (see lot 171).

Antoine Marie Chenavard (1787-1883), architect and archaeologist, studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and later travelled to Italy to study antiquities. In 1818 he was appointed architect in chief at Lyon, later occupying the chair of architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts there, where he was a close colleague of the painter Etienne Rey. A very few copies contain a plate 48bis (not called for in the original plate list).
