Catalogue Note

Hugh Williams (1773-1829), a Scottish landscape painter, returned from an extended tour of Greece and Italy in 1818. He made many paintings of Greece, which earned him the sobriquet 'Grecian Williams'. The work was published in parts, beginning in 1824, and in a number of formats in 1829 (see references below). This copy is the deluxe folio edition, possibly bound from parts (which might explain the missing explanatory text leaf - the folio Blackmer copy was similarly lacking one leaf). See illustration on previous page.
