Catalogue Note

The Blackmer copy, described in the bibliography as "a fine copy on large paper".

This is the second authorised edition of Stackelberg's work, but the first in German, published in Germany, where he lived from 1829-1833. It had first appeared in 1825 in Rome (see lot 192) and this edition is Stackelberg's response to the pirated editions which had begun to appear (see lot 193). It is the only edition to contain his text and and an extra plate (no.30, Femme de Missolonghi - see illustration) and differs from the first edition in this respect (and that the plates are captioned in German, as well as French).

This is part one of an intended two part work. The second part, the 'Gebräuche' or 'Usages', which did not begin publishing until 1835, was still unfinished at Stackelberg's death in 1837.
