Catalogue Note

"This is one of the most important accounts of travels in the Levant, and the first description of Athens which was systematic, detailed and trustworthy" (Blackmer). The first edition of this work appears to be rare.

Spon travelled with George Wheler (see lot 220). Although this copy is lacking the third volume, it nonetheless comprises a description of the whole voyage - volume 2 is devoted to Greece, and ends with the return to France, followed by a glossary of Modern Greek words - according to Weber volume 3 consists mainly of inscriptions.
