Catalogue Note

Despite the broad sweep of the title Sonnini's travels in 1778-1780 were largely confined to Crete, Cyprus, Rhodes and the Aegean, where he visited many of the Cyclades and Dodecanese Islands. The only major towns visited by Sonnini were coastal ones such as Smyrna and Thessalonika, and then only briefly owing to the plague which was then raging.
