Catalogue Note

The gripping events depicted in the plates and described in the preceding explanatory text took place just before the Battle of Navarino. In early October Codrington was engaged in the Gulf of Patras. Despite only having his flagship, the 84-gun HMS Asia, and the smaller the Dartmouth, the Talbot and the Zebra, he succeeded in turning back several Egyptian and Turkish vessels: in which endeavour he was aided by a stiff gale. This success allowed Codrington to resume his watch off Navarino: facilitating his triumph over the Turkish fleet later in October (see lot 170).
