Catalogue Note

Penrose, who visited Athens at the behest of the Society of Dilettanti, aimed "to fill up what had been left imperfect by Stuart and Revett" (see lot 197). He also discusses polychromatic decoration in Athenian buildings, illustrations of which are included in the work.
