Catalogue Note
"[An] important work. Napier was sent to the Ionian Islands in 1819 an carried out several special assignments, including a secret meeting with Ali Pasha. In 1822 he was appointed resident of Cephalonia, and he remained there until 1830 when he left Greece for other duties. Napier's book is informed by an understanding of Greek politics and by his accounts of his contacts with Maitland, Ali Pasha, Byron, and the philhellene Lord Guildford. Byron in particular spent several months in Cephalonia" (Contominas).
