Catalogue Note

The notes for this volume were collected during two journeys – one in 1848, the other the year after – from Salonica, through Macedonia, Albania, Epirus and Thessaly. According to Vivian Noakes, Lear "was finding London life expensive, and to supplement his diminishing capital he published in 1851 the Journals of a Landscape Painter in Albania &c. It was an immediate success 'I receive heaps and loads of compliments & congratulations about the book' he wrote" (Noakes, Edward Lear, p.83).
