Catalogue Note

Leake's first published work, dealing with the modern Greek language, with chapters on Albanian, Wallachian and Bulgarian. Pages 77-94 provide a catalogue of modern authors and their works with dates and places of publication.

This is described in the preface as the first part of Researches, but events overtook him (Napoleon's return from exile meant Leake was dispatched to Switzerland) and part two as such was never published, though he was to write extensively on Greek subjects in books and journals in subsequent years, drawing upon his experiences in the country between 1800 and 1810 (see footnote to lot 121).
