first edition, oblong folio (308 x 380mm.), 50 etched plates by Lawrence, contemporary calf by Carss of Glasgow, blindstamped and in gilt, very slightly spotted, binding slightly rubbed and marked, rebacked retaining original spine (slightly worn)

Catalogue Note

One of the earliest detailed illustrations of the Elgin Marbles, preceded by selections from Stuart and Revett's Antiquities in 1816 (see lot 198) and works by Burrow and Sharp in 1817. The marbles had been removed by Lord Elgin in 1801 and purchased by the British government in 1816.
