A Dutch silver wedding basket, probably Groningen, 18th century

on circular base, risinf to an oval basket of filigrain, the rim decorated with beaded and flowerd, the handle highly decorated with many beads, below the handle three curious hanging flowerd, on top of the handle a decorated finial, unmarked

It is not certain this basket was actually a wedding basket because this basket is unique in shape and form. It is likely the finial was used to hang the basket, in this way the three curious flowers hang beautifully straight under the handle. Eventhough there is no evidence this is in fact a wedding basket, it is likely to presume it is for several reasons. The flowers used to decorated this basket are a symbol of fertility and a common symbol to use at weddings. The use of filigrain was not uncommon in the city of Groningen and it is likely that this basket is a local version of the weddings basket we know.

Overall good, filigrain in very good condition, only a few minor reparations, no chains are mising, the silver alloy is 925. Please note that this basket was possibly not made Groningen, but in South America, and is then late 18th century, early 19th century.
