Catalogue Note
This lot has been based upon a Roman bronze tripod from the Temple of Isis at Pompeii, now in the Museo Nazionale, Naples, Italy. The original was the model for a tripod used at the baptism of Napoleon's son, the king of Rome in 1811 (now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna). Another one was offered to Empress Marie-Louise by the citizens of Milan in 1811, made mainly of lapis lazuli, and came from the workshop of Luigi and Francesco Manfredini. The Roman original was widely copied during the 18th and 19th century and was popular among Grand Tourists.
A comparable pair of guéridons has been made for the The State bedroom at Pavlovsk.
